company went transparent on comp bands. now everyone knows roughly what everyone else makes.
the senior engineer who's been here 5 years found out the new hire with 2 yoe makes only 10k less than him. he hasnt spoken to anyone on the team in a week.
transparency is good in theory but in practice it just makes everyone angry at each other instead of angry at the company

this isnt a transparency problem its a compensation problem. if the 5 year senior is only making 10k more than a new hire, the company has been underpaying him for years. transparency just EXPOSED what was already broken

exactly. the anger should be directed at the company for not giving market adjustments to loyal employees

disagree. some people are just more sensitive about comp than others. ive seen transparent comp work great at companies that actively manage bands

the mid-level at the bottom of a new band is actually in the best position. she can go to her manager with data. transparency gives her leverage
