L6 at meta. just got matched with a team. total comp with RSUs is around 500k.
i should be ecstatic. this is more money than my parents made combined in a year. more than i ever thought id make.
but i feel... empty? like the number doesnt mean anything anymore. my friends outside tech are struggling and i feel disconnected from reality. anyone else experience this?

hedonic treadmill. look it up. you adapted to your previous comp level and now the new number just feels like the new normal. its a well documented psychological phenomenon

bro you are literally in the top 1% of earners in the richest country in history and youre posting about feeling empty on an anonymous forum. go see a therapist and also donate some of that money. perspective helps

i felt the same way at 400k. what helped was going home to visit my parents. watching my dad stress about a $200 car repair while i make that in 2 hours put things in perspective real fast

this is the dirty secret of high TC. past about 200k, more money doesnt make you happier. it just makes you more comfortable while being the same amount of happy (or unhappy)

counter take: 500k absolutely does feel good when you grew up poor. the people who say money doesnt matter are the people who always had it. perspective varies
