staff at a late-stage startup. my days:
8-9: read emails and slack
9-10: architecture review meeting
10-11: roadmap planning with product
11-12: 1:1 with my manager
12-1: lunch (at desk, reading RFCs)
1-2: cross-team sync
2-3: mentoring a junior engineer
3-4: writing design docs
4-5: reviewing PRs (but honestly just skimming)
when do i code? i dont. is this normal for staff?

yes this is normal for staff and above. the job changes from writing code to multiplying other peoples output. if you hate it, consider going back to senior

the best staff engineers i know block 2-3 hours per week for "hands on keyboard" time. not about the output - its about staying sharp

i went staff to senior voluntarily. best career decision i ever made. less money but i actually enjoy my job again

writing design docs IS coding. youre just coding at a higher level of abstraction
