new junior on my team. during onboarding everyone said "dont hesitate to ask questions!"
so she did. and now people are visibly annoyed.
"did you check the docs?" (the docs are wrong)
"try googling it first" (she did, for an hour)
"can you ask in the channel?" (she did and nobody answered for 3 days)
we tell juniors to ask questions then punish them for doing it

the unspoken expectation is "figure it out yourself but if you cant then ask but also you should have figured it out yourself." its a catch-22

the fix is simple: assign a dedicated mentor who has BLOCKED TIME for questions. not a buddy whos also doing their own work

as a senior i try to always respond positively to questions even when im busy. a 5 minute explanation now saves 3 hours later

hot take: if your docs are wrong and your juniors cant find answers, thats a senior engineering failure, not a junior engineering failure
