just watched my 15-year tenure colleague get walked out of the building with a cardboard box. 15 years. built 3 of our core products from scratch.
reorg happened. new VP. "redundant role." gone in 30 minutes.
stop giving your life to a company. they will fire you the moment a spreadsheet says you're too expensive. loyalty is a one way street.
build your skills. keep your resume updated. always be interviewing. always.

this gets posted every week and its always true and nobody ever listens until it happens to them

15 years at one company was already a mistake. no disrespect to your colleague but in tech you should be moving every 2-4 years. for comp, for growth, and exactly for this reason

the "always be interviewing" advice is exhausting though. LC prep takes months. who has the energy to do that while working full time AND having a life

the cruelest part is the 30 minutes. you cant even say goodbye. just security escort and a box. its dehumanizing on purpose because they dont want you to "infect" the remaining employees with negativity

i disagree with the cynicism here. some companies DO reward loyalty. its about choosing the right company, not assuming theyre all evil. ive been at my company 8 years and theyve treated me incredibly well
