my H1B coworker:
- makes 30% less than me for the same role and level
- cant negotiate because switching employers means restarting the green card process (7+ year wait)
- works weekends because hes terrified of being fired and deported
- gets the worst projects because he cant say no
- company knows all of this and uses it as leverage
the H1B system doesnt help immigrants. it creates indentured servants. and companies love it because its cheap compliant labor.
blaming H1B workers for "taking jobs" is like blaming prisoners for cheap prison labor. blame the system, not the people trapped in it

finally someone with a nuanced take. the problem isnt H1B workers. the problem is that the visa ties them to their employer which gives companies insane leverage. decouple the visa from the employer and watch how fast companies stop "sponsoring"

as an H1B holder this is 100% accurate. i cant leave my company even though i hate it because my green card priority date is 2019 and i wont get it until like 2028. im literally trapped

the 30% pay gap is real and its intentional. companies post the H1B salary data publicly (LCA filings). look up any big tech company - the H1B salaries are consistently below the median for the same role. its not accidental

based take. the anti-H1B crowd and the pro-H1B crowd are both missing the point. the system is designed to benefit EMPLOYERS, not workers and not the domestic labor market. everyone else is collateral

this is why i tell every H1B friend to get to canada ASAP. express entry takes 6 months. you get permanent residency immediately. no employer sponsorship needed. the US system is broken beyond repair
