L5 at google. been here 3 years. last year i probably did like 15 hours of real work per week. rest was meetings, reading docs, "thinking time", and honestly just browsing reddit.
my perf reviews are consistently EE. nobody has said anything. my manager seems happy.
but i feel like a fraud. like one day someone is going to look at my commit history and realize ive been doing nothing

welcome to rest and vest. this is literally the business model for L5+ at google. they pay you enough to not leave and you do just enough to not get fired. its a mutually beneficial arrangement

15 hours of deep focused work is honestly more than most people do. studies show the average knowledge worker does like 3-4 hours of actual productive work per day. you're fine

the fact that youre consistently EE while coasting means one of two things: either the bar for EE is incredibly low, or youre actually more productive than you think. id bet on the latter

if you feel guilty, use the free time to learn something. take an ML course. contribute to open source. build a side project. coast at work but grow on your own time

i did this for 4 years at microsoft. eventually the guilt ate me alive and i left for a startup. now i work 60 hours a week and make 40% less. be careful what you wish for
