got a competing offer from a well known unicorn. 400k TC, L5 equivalent.
current job: 220k TC, fully remote, 30 hour weeks, no oncall, love my team, manager is the best ive ever had.
i turned it down. my wife thinks im insane. my friends think im insane.
but the unicorn was 4 days in office, known for crunch culture, and high turnover on the team i'd join.
180k difference. am i making the right call?

220k for 30 hours a week is 141/hr. 400k for 50+ hours a week is 153/hr. adjust for commute costs, stress, and the fact that you LIKE your current job and youre actually making the rational choice

youre not stupid youre wise. most people chase TC and end up miserable. you already found the rare combination of good comp + good lifestyle. dont blow it up for numbers

your wife thinks youre insane because she sees 180k on the table. show her the hourly rate math and the glassdoor reviews for the unicorn. context changes everything

only consideration: how stable is your current company? if theres any chance of layoffs in the next year that changes the equation. a 220k job that might disappear vs a 400k job that definitely exists

i took the high TC offer once. lasted 8 months before burnout. came back to a similar role at lower comp. net result: slightly more money, way more stress, lost time with my family. you made the right call
