VP of engineering (my manager's manager) announced he's leaving for a startup. he was the one who hired me, championed my promo, and protected our team from reorgs.
now i have no idea who the new VP will be or what their priorities are. do I ride it out or start looking preemptively

when your sponsor leaves you have about 6 months before the new leadership "restructures" which is code for bringing in their own people. start looking but dont panic-jump

depends on why they left. if they left because they see the ship sinking, follow them. if they left for a genuinely exciting opportunity, the org might be fine

always be interviewing. always. this situation is exactly why. you should never be in a position where one person leaving makes you feel insecure about your job

the new VP will do one of two things: 1) keep everything the same to avoid rocking the boat for 6 months while they learn, or 2) reorg immediately to "make their mark". option 2 is more common. prepare accordingly

i've survived 4 VP changes. the key is to make yourself visible to the new person early. schedule a 1:1, present your work, make it clear you're a player. dont wait to be noticed
