3 yoe. L4 at a big tech company. every day I go to work and feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. i google basic things. i ask chatgpt to explain code i wrote 2 weeks ago. i spend half my time in meetings pretending to understand the architecture.
everyone around me seems so confident and competent. is this just imposter syndrome or am i actually bad at this job

everyone googles basic things. EVERYONE. the senior staff eng on my team googles how to reverse a string in python because he works in 4 languages and mixes up the syntax. you're fine

the fact that you're worried about it means you're probably not bad. the actually incompetent people have no self-awareness and think they're crushing it

3 yoe is still early. you're supposed to feel confused. if you understood everything at 3 yoe you'd be working on trivial problems

"everyone around me seems confident" — they are also faking it. source: i am one of the confident seeming ones and i have no idea what im doing either

imposter syndrome is real but also: sometimes you're genuinely in over your head and the fix is to skill up, not just feel better about it. hard to tell from a post which one it is for you. get a mentor who can give you honest feedback
