every career advice thread says "build side projects to stand out." ok. i spent 6 months building a full stack marketplace app. nobody looked at it in interviews. nobody checked my github. every interviewer just asked me LC and system design.
the only people who benefit from side projects are content creators who tweet about them.

disagree. side projects got me my first job when i had 0 experience. they matter at the early career stage. at your level (sounds mid+), yeah nobody cares

the side project itself doesnt matter. the STORY does. if you can talk about a technical challenge you solved in your side project during a behavioral round, it's worth more than the github stars

you built it wrong then. a marketplace app is generic. build something that solves a real problem in a niche you know about. thats what stands out

side projects are for learning not for resumes. if you built a marketplace and learned nothing, yeah its a waste. if you learned streaming, websockets, payment integration etc then it wasnt a waste even if nobody looked at it

the real unpopular opinion: LC is also a waste of time. everything in the hiring process is a waste of time except the actual job. but we play the game anyway
