~30% of eng got cut this morning. some of my closest work friends are gone. the slack channels are dead quiet. leadership sent a generic email about "focusing on our core mission."
i survived but i dont feel relieved. i feel guilty and anxious. my workload just doubled and the remaining team is demoralized.
how do you even function after something like this

survivors guilt is real. dont minimize what you're feeling. also start applying ASAP because round 2 is coming in 3-6 months. it always does

"focusing on our core mission" is the most dystopian corporate phrase. you just fired 30% of the people and the mission didnt change? so what were those people doing?

the doubled workload is the real danger. burnout is coming and fast. set boundaries NOW before you internalize the expectation that one person does the work of two

been through 3 layoffs. the pattern is always: 1) shock 2) guilt 3) overwork to "prove value" 4) burnout 5) quit anyway 6 months later
skip steps 3-5 and just start looking now

reach out to the people who got laid off. not to commiserate but to genuinely help. forward their resumes, make intros. its the one thing you can do that actually matters right now
